The group chat scam: a fake fee, a fake draw and a code to "become admin"

In the school, building or church group, someone posts a fee, a draw or a link. Coming from inside the group, it looks trustworthy. Check with the people who run the group.

Also called: fake prize draw, fake group admin.

How it works

  1. The scammer joins the group, or uses the account of someone already in it.
  2. They post a trip fee, a raffle, a prize draw or a promo link.
  3. They ask for a Pix, or for the code you are about to get to "confirm your entry".

Where it usually starts: messaging app.

How to spot it

  • The person charging is not the one who usually runs the group.
  • The Pix key belongs to a person, not the school or the building.
  • They ask for a code to enter the draw or to become admin.

What to do

  • Check with the people who run the group another way before you pay.
  • Do not pass on any code.
  • Tell the group and the people who run it.
