The fake fundraiser scam: a sad story, the scammer's key

A campaign for someone sick or for the victims of a tragedy asks for a Pix. The story is moving, but the key is the scammer's. Give through organisations you can check.

Also called: fake charity, fake fundraiser.

How it works

  1. After a tragedy, or with a photo of a sick child, the scammer starts a campaign.
  2. They spread it in groups and on social media, with copied photos and a rush.
  3. The Pix key belongs to a person, not the family or an organisation.

Where it usually starts: social media, messaging app.

How it arrives on Bipe. Simulation with sample people and messages.

The real message

The real company never asks for a code, a password or a Pix to a personal key. On Bipe, it will show the seal and its CNPJ (coming soon).

How to spot it

  • You cannot reach the family or the organisation.
  • The Pix key is in someone else's name.
  • The same story shows up with different names.

What to do

  • Give to organisations with a CNPJ you can check.
  • Before you confirm the Pix, look at the name your bank shows.
  • Suspicious? Tell the group and report the profile.
