# Accessibility

Bipe has to work for people who use a screen reader, large text or less motion on screen. This page shows what works, what works in part and what comes next.

## The rules we follow

- On the site, the target is level AA of the WCAG 2.2 guidelines.
- In the apps, Bipe follows the system's own accessibility settings, such as VoiceOver, TalkBack, text size and reduce motion.
- All text has AA contrast. Scam warnings and trust seals have AAA contrast.
- No warning depends on colour alone. Every state has an icon and words.
- Every button is at least 44 points on iPhone and 48 dp on Android.

### Screen reader (VoiceOver and TalkBack)

Chats and the main screens work with a screen reader. Some of Bipe's own screens and some icon-only buttons do not yet say what they do. On the site, a screen reader reads only the caption of the app demos.

### Actions without gestures

Each message has an actions menu for people who cannot swipe or long press. Reply, react and archive are not yet in that menu on every screen.

### Text size

The apps follow the system text size on most screens, but some use a fixed size. On the site, browser zoom works. The font size you set in the browser does not change the text yet.

### Tap targets

The rule is 44 points on iPhone and 48 dp on Android for every button. Some small buttons are still below that.

### Reduce motion

With the system setting on, the site demos do not play by themselves and some of the app animations stop. Some animations still run.

### Colour contrast

The colours come from one set for iPhone, Android and the site. All text has AA contrast. Scam warnings and trust seals have AAA contrast.

### Increase contrast

The site uses high-contrast colours when the system asks for them. The apps have those colours too, but they do not switch on with the setting yet.

### Not by colour alone

Scam warnings and trust seals have an icon and words, not only a colour. On iPhone, the unread dot still changes only its colour when someone mentions you.

### Dark mode

The apps and the site follow the system's light or dark theme.

### Voice messages as text

The sender can transcribe a voice message on their own phone and send the text with it. The receiver cannot yet transcribe a voice message that arrived without text.

### Image descriptions

In the apps, a screen reader reads a photo's caption when there is one. You cannot yet write a description of a photo for people who cannot see it. On the site, images have alternative text, or a screen reader skips them when they are only decoration.

### Haptics

Bipe's haptics follow the system setting. If you turn off haptics on your phone, Bipe does not vibrate either.

### Keyboard on the site

The site's links and buttons work with a keyboard. The focus outline is still faint on many buttons, and the link that skips to the content does not show when it gets focus.

### Site forms

Every field has a name, and a screen reader reads the errors. Each error is not yet tied to its field, and focus does not move to it.

## What comes next

In the order we will do it.

1. **Screen reader on every screen** (Next). A name on every button, Bipe's own screens reviewed, and automated checks that run on every change. On the site, the demos get the conversation as text.
2. **Large text and tap targets** (Next). Every screen grows with the system text size, and every button is at least 44 points or 48 dp.
3. **An action for every gesture** (Next). Reply, react, archive and copy without a swipe or a long press.
4. **The site by keyboard and screen reader** (Next). A visible focus outline, a skip link, text that follows the browser font size, and forms that move focus to the error.
5. **Reduce motion everywhere** (Next). With the setting on, nothing pulses or slides in the apps or on the site.
6. **Increase contrast in the apps** (Next). The high-contrast colours switch on with the setting, and a mention gets its own shape. An automated check stops a new colour from going below the minimum contrast.
7. **Accessibility in the stores** (Next). Bipe's page on the App Store and Google Play will say what works, the same as this page.
8. **Tests with people who use it** (Next). People who use a screen reader and large text every day will test the apps on their own phones. Each barrier they find gets fixed.
9. **Transcribe received voice messages and describe photos** (Under study). Transcribe on your phone a voice message that arrived without text, and write a description for each photo you send.

## What we do not know yet

- The review read the code. We have not yet tested the apps with people who use a screen reader every day.
- The apps are in testing. A new screen can ship before it goes through this review.
