# About · Bipe

So Brazil has a way out: an open, Brazilian, independent messenger that works when people need it.

## It does not need to win to be worth it

Bipe does not measure success by pulling people off WhatsApp. It needs to exist, be trustworthy and be ready on the day people look for another option. Signal and Wikipedia are judged the same way.

## A network nobody controls alone

Underneath, Bipe uses Matrix, an open messaging protocol. No company and no government owns the network. The servers are in Brazil, run by Brazilian companies.

## Who makes it

Bipe is a project by Envisioning, a research institute that has studied since 2010 how institutions adapt to technology. Envisioning builds the app, runs the servers in Brazil and answers for the service. It does not own the network: Bipe uses Matrix, an open protocol, and the code goes public soon. With the code open, others can carry on if Envisioning stops. The moderation rules come out at launch.

## Who pays

Users, never. How Bipe is funded is still open. The idea is that businesses pay a flat monthly fee for a verified account. Bipe takes no fee on Pix.
